Rangeela-a Knockout performance

Aamir khan's next release Rangeela directed by Ramgopal varma, a star director down south was a sensation. It was the first movie where A.R. Rehman first scored music directly for a Bollywood movie. Rangeela had blockbuster music, Rangeela had the sensuous Urmila Matondkar swaying to the lilting tunes of Rahman, Rangeela had the technical wizadry of Ram Gopal Varma, but then above everything the heart of Rangeela is the absolutely brilliant performance of Aamir khan. As a mumbai tapori, Aamir khan just went into the skin of the character. I strongly feel that Rangeela would not have worked without Aamir khan and his performance even though it had the other factors. Simply because Aamir khan's performance just holds the movie together. Every scene of Aamir khan in this movie is a brilliant lesson in method acting. Watch out from his first scene where he is seen selling the movie tickets in black outside a theater or the scene in the restaurant, his tapori tiff in the theater or his brilliant silences in the song "Pyar yeh jaane kaisa hain", this is a performance that is a knock out. Many actors have tried the Mumbai tapori character before however have fallen flat. Aamir khan not only imbibed the body language, he also immersed himself into the tapori diction, clothing and walk. This is method acting at its finest. Rangeela for me is one of the finest performances ever in Bollywood by any actor.

Watch out this one scene and you will know what I am talking about.

Aamir khan spent time with the taporis of movie to get into the skin of the character, to observe their way of talk, walk, clothing. He is absolutely particular about the making of a character. Ramgopal Varma himself has told in an interview that Aamir khan gave many valuable suggestions for the improvement of Rangeela. It is the very reason that Aamir khan makes a particular project more viable, better and worthy of repeat value. I do not trust a director's skill if he has succeeded with an Aamir khan movie. Its because there are so many inputs of Aamir khan involved in it. You can only judge him without an Aamir khan in it.

Analysis of Aamir khan's performance in Rangeela: If you wanna make an analysis of Aamir khan's performance in Rangeela, you need to understand the nuances of acting. Probably, people who are aware of method acting can catch the nuances. However, let me present some of the minute details in his performance that you can catch up. Observe Aamir khan's walk into the restaurant wearing the yellow coloured dress with Urmila, you can see an air of arrogance we usually identify with a tapori. What I have observed of taporis is that they really like self appreciation. Aamir khan's character shows many instances of it, when he praises his own attires, not awed even when confronted by Jackie Shroff in the restaurant, he tries to hold his own against a movie star.

That is the basic trait of a tapori. Aamir khan deliciously inculcated that trait without ever going overboard. It does not sound irritating, it sounds lovable because of the humane touch he gives to the character. Also, look out for the theatre scene where he gets into a fight with a man sitting on his front seat. I have observed so many characters who visit a cinema hall just to enjoy themselves. They hardly care for the comfort of others. Ready to get into a fight at the drop of the hat. These kind of small nuances have been brilliantly incorporated by Aamir khan in Rangeela.

RANGEELA MAGIC STILL CONTINUES: Rangeela also started a very important bond of Aamir khan with maestro A. R. Rahman, who along with Aamir were to give some of the most memorable sound tracks of Indian cinema going forward. Rangeela was the first movie of A. R. Rehman and Ram Gopal verma in Bollywood. It remains RGV's biggest hit in bollywood till date even though he has made umpteen movies. The music of Rangeela, Aamir khan's dialogues in Rangeela, his clothing, Urmila matondkar's dances make Rangeela a must watch for cinema lovers.

The magic of Rangeela still continues.
