Mela, which released in the early 2000, was a rare mistake from Aamir khan. As an ardent Aamir khan fan, its still my responsibility to also highlight the failures of Aamir khan in his career, though they are absolutely scarce. Mela, directed by Dharmesh Darshan, who was high after the mega success of Raja Hindustani was a film loosely based on the Ramesh Sippy cult movie Sholay. Aamir khan has learnt more from his mistakes than from his successes. I am glad Mela came at the right time for Aamir khan. i.e at the start of the twenty first century. It released a week before Kaho na Pyar hain and was followed by the Srk starrer Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. Mela was perhaps the last movie which Aamir could have done for obligations or trust on the director.
Mela had everything that you actually don't expect from an Aamir khan movie. It had loud performances, laughable direction, insane sets, crappy dialogues. The film also starred his brother Faisal Khan and Twinkle khanna. You could imagine the director's vision for the movie when he took action director Tinu verma in the role of the villain 'Gujjar" inspired by the iconic villain "Gabbar". Tinu Verma just hammed all through his role, Twinkle Khanna was at her screeching worst, Faisal Khan looked like he didn't know what was happening around him. The movie had some sporadic bursts of comic brilliance by Aamir khan, but then even the dialogues given to him were so loud, even Aamir would now cringe in his seat if he watches it. The film opened well but then tanked at the box office.
I am glad that a movie like Mela didn't work at the box office. Sometimes there are movies which work at the box office due to numerous factors and if a bad movie works, it becomes a precedent for the actor and directors to follow it. The movie is actually a text book for the Bhojpuri movies. I am pretty sure that anyone can make a good Bhojpuri movie after watching Mela.
As an Aamir khan fan, I am glad Aamir khan did a 'MELA" because he never ever did it again.. This is where Aamir khan rose himself and just put his foot down against any obligations. No matter how big a director it could be, no matter how personal obligations might come in the way, he firmly decided it was going to be hist last movie which he did for any of the above factors. I am glad that Aamir khan fans have never defended Mela. It is the duty of every loyal fan to make his idol aware of his mistakes. If you simply defend a bad decision of your idol, you are actually doing more harm than good.
WE THANK Aamir khan for doing a "Mela" and then never doing it again. "Mela dilon ka aata hain ek baar aake chala jaata hain" Thank you so much Aamir. Not a single wrong foot after Mela.
