Maa, Cinema and Aamir khan

India probably could be the most cinema frenzy nation in the world. Cinema has always been a favourite past time right from the inception of cinema in our country. When one sees the stars on the silver screen, people just tend to forget their daily worries of life and get transported to another world that makes them laugh, makes them cry and makes them root for the characters on screen.
Along with cinema, we all also love our "maa"i.e. mother. The mother has always been an important character in the Indian society and a great influence in the lives of many greats who have achieved glory in their respective fields. I strongly feel in Megastar Aamir khan's case too, this has been the truth. Yes, cinema and his maa(mother) have been the most important influences in his life and made him what he is today.

Aamir khan was born into a Bollywood family, where his father Mr. Tahir Hussain was a producer and his uncle Nasir Hussain, a celebrated director. As a child, he would have certainly seen the ups and downs of a cinematic family, the pressures associated with the box office fortunes, the nuances of acting. Its not a given that a child born in a cinematic family has to also have the genes of an actor or any other field related to cinema. Aamir khan has himself quoted in an interview that his family was actually opposed to his idea of joining movies because they have seen the extreme side of the cinema field. Film industry in India is a risky business. The success rate of movies is a mere 5 percent and the stakes are high. There have been umpteen instances where the producers, distributors tend to lose even their life time earnings with just movie. It could have been the reason why his family opposed his idea of joining movies. However, somewhere down the line, Aamir khan had subconsciously decided that this was his career, this was the field where had his heart. This was where he wanted to prove himself. He began as an assistant director and then made a debut as a lead actor in the film directed by Mansoor Khan. The stakes would again have been high, his family was again involved with the movie. Thankfully, the movie was a trendsetter and Aamir khan had arrived on the Indian silver screen. The rest as they say is history.

Apart from cinema, his mother has been a major influence on his life. Aamir khan attributes all his qualities today are due to the teachings of his mother. She always had taught him to be humble, to be good to others, to be passionate, to be grounded. All these teachings had strongly been imprinted on Aamir right from childhood. One particular incident which Aamir khan explained in an interview about his mother explains this greatness. Aamir, who was an active tennis player right from childhood once had a tennis match and he returned home after defeating his opponent and was very happy. He had defeated and emerged victorious. When he returned home, he gave the trophy to his mother and told him how happy he was. To his surprise, his mother reacted that it was good that he won, however he also need to think about the boy who lost. Remember, he would also have a mother waiting at his home, praying that her son wins and comes home happily. This particular incident shook Aamir khan up. I think chapters and teachings like these have made Aamir khan what he is today. He does not try to defeat others, he just tries to raise his bar and compete with himself. He has never indulged in the rat race. As the famous saying goes" Even if you win the rat race, remember you are still a rat" .

Aamir khan carefully absorbed the teachings of cinema and his mother. He studied cinema, he absorbed cinema. He became cinema. While doing so, he still had all the values taught by his mother in tact. You can become the biggest superstar, however being a good human being is the greatest quality that one can have. To achieve the position where he is today, Aamir khan took the difficult path, painstakingly building his reputation and audience with one memorable performance after another, one blockbuster after another, one box office record after another, giving classics after classics. Yet, still holding all the values taught by his mother.

Aamir khan has been truly a blue eyed boy of Bollywood cine"ma" and his maa. Continuing the tradition of our nation.
