Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar, directed by Mansoor Khan and starring Aamir khan, is a glorious story of coming of age. This is an absolute marvel of a movie which was way ahead of its times. During the 90's when usually people where being subjected to loud characters even in colleges, Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar was a refreshing change. Starring as Sanjay Lal, Aamir khan delivered his finest performance till that time in this movie. Its character is actually one which can be easily identified by millions of youth. A happy go lucky high school student who just roams around with his friends, is often scolded by his father, has an obedient elder brother. The first crush, the realisation of true love, peer pressure and of course the success of an underdog, this movie takes you on a whirlwind of emotions beautifully.
Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar perhaps was the first movie which gave glimpses of the brilliant method actor that Aamir khan is. Though he had done quite a few movies before this, this one was a cut above the rest. Aamir khan became the high school boy Sanjay Lal. He played the character so brilliantly that its hard to imagine any other mainstream actor who could have pulled it off. Watch out for his performance when he tries to woo his first crush played by Pooja Bedi, his comic banter with his friends, his interactions with his elder brother and his father, Aamir khan is a treat to watch. Watch out for the thrilling cycle race finale where Aamir khan cycles his way into his father's heart.
Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar became a hit when it released, however Aamir khan felt that it should have done better business. He was actually right. But, then I sincerely feel a good movie gets its due, sooner or later. Like Andaz apna apna, which didn't work at the box office when it released and later became a cult classic, Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar too went on to become a classic and an absolute favourite amongst the youth. Who would not identify the song and Aamir khan in slowmotion in "Pehla Nasha" and remember their first crush. Jatin-Lalit were at their brilliant best.
Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar sowed the seeds for the kind of performances Aamir khan was to deliver in future. It also showed the world that the "Sikandar" had arrived. The Sikandar (emperor) who would rule Indian cinema....Long live the Sikandar Aamir khan.
