Aamir khan's next release "Sarfarosh" was a hard hitting cop drama against the backdrop of cross border terrorism. The movie gave Indian cinema one of the best if not the best cops ever played on the silver screen. Aamir khan as "ACP RATHOD" just knocked it out of the park. Aamir khan had earlier played a cop in "Baazi", however Sarfarosh was a more polished and detailed effort. Directed by first timer John Mathew Mathan, Sarfarosh had everything going for it. Indian cinema has seen cop movies right from Amitabh's Zanjeer to the Singhams of our times. What makes Sarfarosh different then? Lets take a detailed look.
Yes, there have been many cop movies made in Bollywood and Indian cinema. They all made a larger than life picture of the protagonist cop where a cop single handedly kills 100's of goons, where a cop does unreal stunts, the cop walks in slowmotion with ear splitting background music in the background. Sarfarosh was different. It was a painstakingly detailed movie which captured the working of the cop, the crime branch and followed the cracking of a case in a surgical manner. Before the release, many commented that Aamir khan's physical appearance does not match to that of a cop. But in ACP Rathod, Aamir khan delivered a memorable performance, one of the very best giving ACP Rathod, the mentality of a real cop with a touch of humanity. Watch out for the brilliant Aamir khan interacting with his fellow officers, watch him chasing a goon on the streets of Mumbai like a real cop, the helplessness on his face when his father is left handicapped by the terrorists. Aamir khan plays the no nonsense cop with elan. Sarfarosh will always go down in Indian cinema as one of the greatest ever cop movies and an ultimate classic. The movie was a bit hit at the box office and one of the top grosser of the year.
Highlights of Sarfarosh:
Sarfarosh has many brilliant moments right from the first scene where the song "zindagi maut na ban jaye" plays in the background to the final scene where in Aamir khan walks away with his team on another mission. Sarfarosh has one of the best screenplay ever written for a mainstream Hindi cinema. It keeps you gripped all till the very end. Aamir khan holds his ground so well even though he is surrounded by a brilliant set of actors right from Naseeruddin Shah to Govind Namdeo around him. Watch out for the scene where he has argues with Mukesh Rishi, his delicious shayari and romantic interludes with Sonali Bendre, his final showdown with Naseeruddin Shah. Aamir khan played a patriotic cop, however never indulged in jingoism.
Sarfarosh also raised very important issues like the injustice meted out to a minority police officer, the pressure tactics that the cops face through an investigation. With relevant and real dialogues by Hriday Lani-Pathak Vats, Sarfarosh is also a technically brilliant execution. Look out for the sizzling cinematography, the art direction to keep it as real as possible and surprisingly the music to blend in beautifully in a movie where music hardly has a role.
Interesting facts:
When Sarfarosh released, some were of the view that it would not work in a commercially driven industry. It become one of the top grossers of the year. Surprisingly, a few days after the release, war broke out between India and its neighbouring nation again highlighting the issues raised in the movie. The movie was topical and relevant. Not many would have observed that the music of Sarfarosh is one of the varied music tracks ever in a Bollywood movie. It has a ghazal in Hosh Walon ko Khabar kya, it has a romantic song in Is Deewane Ladke Ko, it has a patriotic song in Zindagi Maut na Ban Jaaye, a club number, a folk based song. Now that's some variety. Kudos to Jatin Lalit.
Sarfarosh still holds importance in today's times. The issues raised by Sarfarosh are still prevalent. Patriotism is not jingoism. Patriotism is working for the nation and serving it. Watch it any day, any time. Aamir khan again delivered a classic in Sarfarosh.
